Mission Statement
„Sustainable mobility for people"
The Research Center of Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering conducts interdisciplinary research in the field of sustainable mobility for people.
FIELDS OF COMPETENCE
Since more than 40 years, we have been following an interdisciplinary approach to various areas of transport, such as:
- walking, cycling, public transport
- motorised private transport
- accessibility & mobility of children
- traffic safety
- travel behavior and modeling
- e-mobility
- automated driving
PLANING AND CONSULTING
- transport masterplans for cities and municipalities
- collaboration with Austrian ministries, municipal departments, public transport operators
- mobility management for companies etc.
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH
- leading and participation in numerous national and international research projects
- collaboration with more than 240 institutions worldwide
- intensive knowledge exchange with guest researchers
TEACHING
Lectures for bachelor, master and doctoral studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, aditionally training for professionals.
EXPERT PANELS AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATIONS
As members of the Austrian Research Association for Roads, Railways and Transport (FSV), we are involved in the preparation of guidelines and working papers. In addition, we are actively represented in various national and international expert panels and research associations.
PUBLICATIONS
Our research findings are publicly available in the publication database of TU Wien: publik.tuwien.ac.at
TEAM
Our interdisciplinary team incorporates a wide range of disciplines such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, spatial planning, geography, environmental engineering, landscape planning, informatics as well as social sciences and economics.
HISTORY
The Research Center Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering evolved from one of the long-established institutes of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the "Institute for Road and Railway Construction" founded in the 1960s.
From 1989 to 2008, the Research Center was called "Institute for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering".
Since the 1980s, we have dealt with all areas of transport. This manifested itself in a shift from a car-centric approach towards a transport system where the priority is on people and the environment. FVV additionally seeks to connect transport and other areas of life, such as human behavior, social concerns, the economy as well as the environment, and processes these interrelations using an interdisciplinary approach. The staff of the Research Center is therefore used to work in interdisciplinary groups.
The Research Center cooperates with numerous national and international institutions and enterprises, especially in connection with EU projects. The main advantage lies in the combination of theory and practice, which is also reflected in the processing of traffic concepts and cooperation with citizens' initiatives.
Over the last twenty years, the Research Center's staff has developed new scientific foundations in the field of transportation planning and traffic engineering through conducting a variety of research projects and studies for ministries and other public bodies.
Especially in recent years, the inclusion of evolutionary approaches to explain human behavior has created the possibility to develop practice-oriented models for planning, in which interdependencies are presented. Especially in the fields of road design, road space design, energy consumption, environmental issues, human behavior, promotion of the environmental network, transport infrastructure and mobility, transit traffic, traffic safety, freight transport and political measures, the department has considerable know-how.
With its stock of 30 current series of journals and about 10,000 books, the library of the faculty is one of the most renowned libraries in this field in Austria. Our research findings are publicly available in the publication database of the Vienna University of Technology: publik.tuwien.ac.at.
